Former president, Olusegun
Obasanjo, Thursday bemoaned the non recognition and celebration of worthy
Nigerians by until foreigners begin to see the good in such persons.
Speaking at a send off lunch he
organized in honor of Most Reverend Josiah Idowu-Fearon on his
appointment as the Secretary General of the World Anglican Communion at
the Obasanjo Presidential Library, the former President said that Nigerians
should see the good things in themselves.
Addressing the gathering which
included the Catholic Bishop of Abuja ; Cardinal John Onaiyekan and
the Ogun State Deputy Governor; Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, President Obasanjo
said that God has been using foreign bodies to recognised and celebrate worthy
Nigerians. He said “one of the things we don’t often do is that we don’t see
the good in ourselves but God has been gracious enough that others see good in
us and celebrate us.
“We have treasures in our hands and
I pray God continue to help us to appreciate what we have and use it for
the honour and glory of the country” He explained that the Lunch held at the
Green Legacy Resort Hotel within the Presidential Library was to honour
Bishop Idowu-Fearon who is said was a worthy person who has been recognised and
appointed by he Anglican Communion, He however expressed regrets that some
Muslims invited across the country could not make the lunch because of the
Ramadan.
In his own remarks Bishop
Idowu-Fearon said that with his new appointment, he would be based in the
United Kingdom where he would be working with the Archbishop of Canterbury,
coordinate the Anglican Consultative Council comprising of 38 Provinces and
coordinate the Primates meeting. Speaking about President Obasanjo, the Bishop
said thathis analysis of the state of the nation was always amazing and that
through Obasanjo he had become more informed on the nation’s politics.
He said “Baba is is not for
Christians only he is baba for everybody . Christians , Muslims and traditional
worshipers. It is one God. What we cannot do away with is specificity. “The
Sultan was going to come but had to travel. The Publisher of Trust Kabir Yusuff
and Aba Kyari. But the Ramadan”.
Also present at the lunch were the
Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo; the Olubara of Ibara, Oba
Jacob Omolade; the Publisher of Leadership newspaper, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah;
General Manager of Vanguard newspapers, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye; Senator Tunde
Ogbeha, Capt. Toju Ogisi and Chief Yemi Ogunbiyi among others.
